Suicide statistics

The Ministry of Health has reported Vietnam’s suicide rate to be approximately 40,000 people in every year (around 100 suicides a day), four times higher the number of fatalities caused by traffic accidents.

Risk Factors, Protective Factors, and Warning Signs

Suicide does not have a singular cause. It typically happens when multiple stressors converge with underlying mental health issues, leading to feelings of hopelessness and despair. The most common condition associated with suicide is depression, though it is often undiagnosed or untreated. Anxiety, substance abuse, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia are also key contributors, especially if left unaddressed. However, it’s important to note that people who actively manage their mental health can lead fulfilling lives.

Treatments

Supporting individuals in distress or at risk of suicidal behavior requires compassionate and effective interventions. In recent years, various approaches and treatments have been developed to help those struggling with suicidal thoughts or who have attempted suicide. These strategies focus on providing emotional support, building resilience, and addressing underlying mental health issues, ensuring a comprehensive approach to prevention and recovery.
